SPE 713 Clinical: Intensive Instruction for the Non-Responsive Reader

Work one-on-one with a student who has difficulty reading.

Demonstrating your skill in teaching the Wilson Reading System® (WRS) is the objective of this two-semester supervised practicum. Using WRS practicum student selection criteria, you’ll identify and secure a practicum student in grades 4–12 with significant word level deficits. You’ll then successfully deliver a minimum of 60 WRS lessons through WRS Step 4.2. A Wilson trainer will observe you working with your student five times during your practicum using video conferencing technology.

Course Description

In addition to finding a student and delivering at least 60 lessons, you’ll meet other requirements for this course. These include:

  • A pretesting report including educational background and current test results of potential practice “case study” student(s)
  • Five three-block lesson plans for each semester
  • Development of teacher’s and student’s notebook and student’s written work in accordance with WRS program standards
  • Two post-testing lesson plans
  • Completion of post-testing and written report including grade equivalents, standard scores and percentage scores after a minimum of 60 lessons
  • Class participation through the course via start-up and implementation meeting
  • Five teacher/student observations as scheduled by the Wilson trainer

Wilson Language Training and Wilson® Accredited Partners have received accreditation by the International Dyslexia Association, and WRS has been endorsed by the Council of Administrators of Special Education.

What You’ll Learn

In SPE 713, you’ll put the Wilson Reading System® into action with a real student with reading difficulties. When you complete the course, you will be able to:

  • Demonstrate mastery in the teaching of decoding, encoding, fluency, comprehension and vocabulary.
  • Show diagnostic skill assessment and planning for a student with reading challenges.
  • Know how language concepts are conveyed through accurate teaching with multisensory procedures.
  • Demonstrate student success and mastery of decoding and encoding skills.
  • Understand and be able to implement progress monitoring.
