Students who can’t read well can’t learn well. Many factors can contribute to an inability to read well. For students with persistent phonological coding deficits, the Wilson Reading System® (WRS) has proven successful in teaching students grade two and up to read.
In SPE 711, you’ll build on the knowledge and skills you gained in SPE 710, focusing on key components of the WRS’ Steps 1–3, including phonological awareness, phonics and spelling at the beginning levels of decoding and encoding, and the closed syllable pattern. Additional topics include single word accuracy/automaticity, fluency with decodable and authentic text, vocabulary development and listening/reading comprehension at beginning states of reading.
Sample Course Topics
In SPE 711, you’ll continue to improve your knowledge of WRS techniques. Weekly topics may include:
- Lesson Plan Review
- Topics for Wilson Reading System® Steps 1–3
- WRS Step 1: Closed Syllables
- WRS Step 2: Closed Syllables
- WRS Step 3: Closed Syllables
