This course covers the roles of other relevant child-serving systems within communities that can be supportive of addressing matters associated with social, emotional, and behavioral wellness of PK-students (e.g., children’s mental health and juvenile justice).

Throughout their 40 hours of fieldwork, teacher candidates will apply skills in communicating and collaborating effectively with children and youth who have experienced trauma or mental illness, as well as their families, and school and community partners. They will also practice professionally advocating for children and youth and their social, emotional, and behavioral wellness. Confidentiality and professional ethics will be emphasized and required.

Upon completing SPE 614 you can:

  • Find child-serving support within the community that can address matters associated with social, emotional, and behavioral wellness of PK-students
  • Professionally advocate for, and communicate and collaborate with, children and youth who have experienced trauma or mental illness, as well as their families, and school and community partners
  • Apply concepts learned throughout the program with PK-12 students who have experienced trauma, adverse childhood experiences, or have a mental health diagnosis.

In this course, students create a Field Experience Portfolio, reflecting on their field experiences in sites such as emergency shelters, Child Advocacy Centers, residential and partial day hospital programs, and Crisis Centers. A total of 40 field hours are required for the successful completion of this course.
