Math and science have presented learning challenges to students, and for students with learning differences, the challenges can be even greater. Now, thanks to years of dedicated research, procedures have been created to help students grasp the necessary concepts needed to conquer math and science subject matter. In this course, you learn a variety of effective teaching techniques to apply to numerous learning styles.

Students with learning differences need to be supported and challenged.  When you learn how to evaluate and incorporate a range of methods into your teacher practice, you become a better teacher for all of your students. Thanks to your new skills, your students can flourish in math and science.

This course is an intensive and comprehensive study of research practices for the instruction of mathematics and content area subjects, for students with high-incidence disabilities. Content covers diagnostic planning, curriculum design, progress monitoring and the development of student-specific programs involving evidence-based interventions.

The curriculum emphasizes the Response to Intervention (RTI) model, and most of the strategies discussed are based on research that supports multi-sensory instruction, integrated learning experiences and the multiple intelligences. Coursework also explores the development of appropriate goals and the implementation of research-based curriculum, concepts, and instructional strategies that are most effective for students with high incidence disabilities.

Topics covered include the Five Strands of Math Proficiency and their uses in the classroom, incorporating board games into lessons to develop math skills and the pros and cons of the Discrepancy Model versus RTI.

Examples of What You’ll Learn

When you complete SPE 605, you will be able to:

  • Identify the characteristics of students who struggle in math.
  • Discuss the Five Strands of Math Proficiency developed by the National Research Council, and how to incorporate them in the classroom.
  • Implement and interpret the most commonly used diagnostic assessments in your instruction. Write specific and measurable Individualized Education Program goals.
  • Explain how student errors may shed light on where their difficulties may lie using Error Pattern Analysis.
  • Use diagnostic tools and the standards set forth by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics to develop appropriate Individualized Education Plan goals.
  • Discuss the three tiers of intervention and the basic principles that drive Response to Intervention.
  • Integrate multi-sensory approaches to math.
  • Identify and incorporate current research in mathematics education into your teaching practice.
  • Teach the more complex mathematical concepts of algebra and geometry.
  • Identify key concepts in the instruction of science.
  • Discuss the ideological shifts surrounding science and how best practices for all students are moving towards inquiry-based, experiential learning.
