Learning differences are a reality in the classroom. As a teaching professional, you can implement practices to help students with learning differences lead a much more productive educational life. This course gives you the skills to identify a wide range of learning disabilities, as well as the knowledge of research-based practices to address the specific needs of these at-risk students. From preschool to high school, students with learning disabilities need your guidance and support. With your enhanced understanding, you will be able to provide them with the best opportunity for success.

This course is a comprehensive study of theoretical issues and research-based diagnoses as well as instructional planning for students with learning challenges. Content covers curriculum design and development of differential instruction programs involving evidence-based interventions that meet students’ needs. Criteria include formative assessment, developmental and educational information, integrated learning experiences, and specialized adaptations and resources. You will explore the eight core concepts of the Individuals with Disabilities Act (IDEA) to ensure that instruction meets the requirements of this legislation.

Validated practices and procedures for specific characteristics of high incidence, along with prevention and intervention strategies, are also discussed. These include multiple theoretical approaches for individuals at risk for academic or behavioral failure, systematic implementation of instructional variables, and classroom management techniques for effective instruction of children and adolescents with disabilities.

When you complete SPE 603, you will be able to:

  • Identify the major federal and state laws that have contributed to serving students with special needs.
  • Discuss the process and conflicts involved in placing and labeling students with disabilities, as well as the process by which students are both referred and identified for special education services.
  • Identify effective educational approaches for individuals with mild intellectual disabilities, emotional disturbance, specific learning disabilities, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorders.
  • Develop lesson plans utilizing instructional strategies to meet the needs of these students in general education classrooms.
  • Identify the primary characteristics of students with learning disabilities and Implement approaches for teaching them.
  • Explain the social aspects of learning disabilities.
  • Explain the concept of inclusion and demonstrate the purpose of various inclusion models.
  • Implement instructional strategies for students with learning disabilities in preschool, middle, and high school.
  • Institute effective classroom management programs.
  • Collaborate and communicate with families and caregivers.
  • Identify the characteristics of students with four specific disorders and discuss informal and formal assessments for each of them, as well as scientifically based instruction and interventions.
  • Identify collaborative practices with mental health professionals.
  • Use appropriate functional behavioral assessments and behavioral intervention plans.
