The terms “business intelligence” and “business analytics” are sometimes used interchangeably despite having different definitions. Thomas Davenport1, professor of information technology and management at Babson College, argues that business intelligence should be divided into querying, reporting, online analytical processing (OLAP), an “alerts” tool, and business analytics. In other words, business analytics is a subset of business intelligence that focuses on statistics, prediction, and optimization, rather than the reporting functionality.
Global revenue in the business intelligence and analytics market was forecast to reach $16.9 billion in 2016, an increase of 5.2 percent from 2015,2 according to the latest forecast from Gartner, Inc.
It is estimated that by 2018, there will be a shortage of 1.5 million analysts and managers for available positions.3
